The 3 mistakes that stopped me from getting to $5K and then $10K+ months

I know the $5K months is mentioned a lot in the women’s entrepreneurial circles that I belong to and probably in yours too. And you know, it is on many levels a very cool measure and a great place to get to. It starts to support your business in a way where you can hire team members such as VAs, web developers, graphic design and more so that you can focus on the core of your work, the stuff that you do best, and that really is your work to do in this world.

I’ve personally just hit the 2 year mark for my business (my first ever business!) and it was only in the last 9 months that I got to consistent $5K months and then up to $10K months, and even $15K and up to a very cool $30K month. The first 15 months were really up and down, there were up to $8K months and then back to $3K and so on. But it’s nothing to be afraid of, it’s paying your dues as you learn your craft and what it takes to run a business. And for those of you who are right there right now, you would agree with me how it builds character!

And I agree with those who say that the first $5K and then the first $100K are the hardest to make. I think it’s because there are simply certain business structures and systems that you need to put in place, and certain skills that you need to learn so that you can leverage yourself to this level. And when you’ve done this foundational stuff, then wow, it’s a very cool place to be and expand from!

And so today, to help you get there sooner, I wanted to share with you my 3 biggest mistakes that stopped me from getting to consistent $5K months in that first year. Plus the #1 thing that I’ve done the BEST and that’s by far the biggest reason for my success.

Mistake #1 – Taking too long to “get online”

For the first 6 months of my business I had no online presence. It took me this long to have my website built or use any form of online marketing! Now, granted I’m not regretting that I invested into custom designed branding and website because I was dead set to “go pro” and make this my new life. No plan B. However it did hold me back from the #1 key activity that you need to have in place as soon as possible, list building. List building is much more important than branding or social media or consistent weekly blogging etc. It is what brings new people to your sales funnel daily, so that new people can hear about your message and invest into working with you. And the good news is that you actually don’t even need to have a website to start doing this. There’s great tools like Lead Pages that allow you to get your message out there, list build and make sales even before your website is ready!

Which brings me to my 2nd biggest mistake…

Mistake #2 – Not understanding sales funnels

Even after I did start list building and experimenting with Facebook ads and guest blogs and the like, I still didn’t understand what a sales funnel is. I had no strategy for the flow of my new leads. It wasn’t until I hired a specific coach to help me implement sales funnels into my business that my business grew to those $10K, $15K and $30K months. This really was a game changer.

Mistake #3 – Winging my way through my sales conversations

Now, you know I have a soft spot for sales and sales conversations and helping women overcome the fears around money and selling. Here’s the thing, even when you have your sales funnels in place and have new leads coming to you, if you don’t know how to close them, you’ve blown that opportunity. Gone in the wind! 🙁 I was making so many mistakes with this to begin with, giving “free coaching sessions” instead of discovery sessions was probably the biggest one. And with that the whole sales part of the session was a trainsmash. Today though, as you know, I’m proud to say that this is one of my strongest areas as a coach and a business woman. And I’m super proud of this.​

The #1 thing that I did BEST –  I hired the best mentors and coaches to support me

This is something that I’m really really passionate about. If you’ve been on a webinar with me, you might have heard me share that I’ve invested round $70K in my training, coaches and masterminds in the last 2 1/2  years.
